Group Functioning and Leader’s Behavior

Organizations across globe differ in the type of leadership styles they employ. The choice of leadership style is determined by the organizational culture and goals. Autocratic and democratic leadership patterns are widespread in most companies. Autocratic leadership implies that a leader imposes all decision in a group (Lewin, 1999). It is also termed authoritarian leadership. Conversely, democratic leadership involves group members in setting objectives and overall decision-making. It can also be referred to as participative leadership.
The impacts of the two types of leadership patterns on a group’s behavior and productivity differ immensely. A research study on the effect of the atmosphere on the life of children in a particular group indicated that the type of leadership fosters specific attributes and productivity in children (Lewin, 1999). Autocratic leadership instills hostility among members. Individuals compete amongst themselves to execute a task in accordance with the leader’s instructions. Therefore, the “togetherness spirit” is of less importance to the group. On the contrary, democratic leadership provides individuals with opportunities to intervene in situations. As a result, the members of a group remain integrated and create healthy relationships.
A leader’s behavior has a considerable impact on the group’s behavior and functioning. Therefore, a leader should possess emotional intelligence, and it can only be achieved through self-awareness. Studies have indicated that an emotionally intelligent leader often improves the performance of a group by a particular magnitude, and a manager’s mood is reflected in his or her followers. These observations implied that leader’s emotional intelligence affects work environment (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2001). Therefore, a leader may opt to adopt autocratic or democratic leadership in accordance with the situation at hand. An emotionally intelligent leader may apply authoritarian leadership when a task designated to a group needs to be carried out in a delineated manner and for a specified duration. In circumstances where time is limited, a leader may have to dictate policy to members of the group.
